Home Paint protection

The stones still hit.
The paint never finds out.

Eight mil of clear self-healing urethane over the panels the road throws things at. You cannot see it once it is on, which is the whole point. The difference shows up three winters later when the bumper still has nothing in it.

From $899 front end 8 mil self-healing 10 years film warranty Lifetime on our fitting

Same road. Same stones.

Drag the handle. Left is a front end after about thirty thousand highway miles with nothing on it. Right is the same panel with film over it. The stones hit both; only one of them keeps the marks. Drag the handle. Left: thirty thousand miles, bare. Right: the same panel, covered.

Illustration. One real front end, with stone damage rendered onto one copy. The pattern and density match what comes through the door.

Repainting a chipped bumper and wing runs $600–$1,200 a panel, and a resprayed panel never quite matches the ones next to it. Film on the same front end is $899, once.

What "self-healing" means

The top layer of the film has memory in it. Light swirls, wash marks and fingernail scratches close up as it warms. Sunshine over a few hours, warm water in a few minutes, a heat gun on a low setting in seconds. It is a real material property, not a marketing line, and it is why a filmed bumper still looks new after three years of car washes.

  • Eight mil thick, with a self-healing top coat
  • Will not fix a deep gouge that has cut through the film
  • Hydrophobic surface. It stays cleaner and dries faster than the paint next to it
  • Optically clear, so a metallic still flakes and a gloss still reflects

Where it goes, and why there

Damage is not evenly distributed. Almost all of it lands on the bumper, the leading edge of the hood, the mirror caps and the lower wings, which is why the Front End package exists and why it is the one we recommend if the budget only stretches so far.

  • Front End. Bumper, 18″ of hood and wings, mirror caps, headlights
  • Full Front. Whole hood and wings, bumper, mirrors, lamps, A-pillars, roof leading edge
  • Whole car. Every painted panel, including doors, sills and rear arches
  • Add-ons. Door cups, door edges, the loading lip on a hatch or estate

Wrapped edges, not cut edges

The difference between film you can see and film you cannot is entirely in the edges. A cheap fit cuts the film short of the panel edge, which leaves a visible line that collects dirt. We wrap it around behind the panel wherever the shape allows, which takes longer and looks like nothing at all.

  • Badges, handles and lamps removed rather than trimmed around
  • Panel gaps opened so the edge can be tucked out of sight
  • Bulk-fitting on unusual cars. Never a blade against your paint

Three packages, and add-ons.

Prices are for a standard sedan or hatchback. SUVs run about 18% more, pickups about 28%. Everything includes clay-bar prep and the courtesy car.

Add-ons and the full price list

About film specifically.

The rest are on the questions page.

Can you see it?

Not from a normal distance, and not at all where the edges are wrapped behind panels. Where an edge has to end on a visible face. The middle of a hood on a Front End job, for example. There is a fine line you can find if you go looking. That is the trade-off of a partial, and it is why Full Front exists.

Does it yellow?

Modern urethane with a proper top coat does not, and the ten-year manufacturer warranty covers it if it does. The films that yellowed were older PVC-based products, and that reputation has outlived the material by about fifteen years.

Film or a ceramic coating?

Different jobs. A coating makes paint easier to wash and holds gloss; it stops nothing. Film stops stones. If you want both, film first and coat over the top. Never the other way round, because adhesive will not bond to a coating.

Can I put film over a wrap?

Yes, and on the leading edges of a fresh wrap it is a good idea. It is the one thing a colour-change wrap cannot do for itself. It has to go on after the wrap has cured, not the same day.

What about coloured paint film?

It exists, in a smaller range of colours, and it gives you the new colour and the armour in one layer. It costs about 35% more than clear film for the same coverage. If you want a colour change that also stops stones, this is the way to do it in one pass.

Does it come off?

Yes, with controlled heat, and the paint underneath is normally in better condition than the panels beside it. Ten years is a realistic life; there is no hurry to remove it before then.

Protect the front end first.

It is where nearly all the damage lands, and it is the cheapest thing on this page.
