A chip is an hour.
A crack is a windscreen.
Laminated glass is two sheets with plastic between them. A stone breaks the outer sheet and leaves an air pocket. Fill that pocket with resin the same day and it stays a chip. Leave it, and the first cold morning with the heater on full runs it across the screen.

When a repair still works
Vacuum pulls the air out of the break, pressure pushes resin in, and ultraviolet light cures it hard. The damage stops spreading and most of it stops catching the light. A repaired chip does not vanish completely, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not done many.

- Outside the driver's line of sight
- Not running into the edge of the glass
- Not already spidered into legs longer than an inch
Bring it in the week it happens. The odds drop every time the car heats up and cools down.
When it needs replacing
The old glass comes out, the pinch weld gets cleaned back and primed, and the new screen is set on fresh urethane. Then it has to sit. Safe drive-away time depends on the adhesive and the temperature, and we will give you the actual figure for the day rather than a round number.
If your car has a camera behind the mirror for lane keeping or emergency braking, that camera is aimed at the old glass. It has to be recalibrated against the new one or the car reads the road wrong.
